Exclusive Report for Cobia & Mangrove Snapper

September 15th, 2009

A group of Marathon local businessmen took advantage of some late summer downtime to fish with Capt. Chris Johnson and SeaSquared Charters out of 7 Mile Marina. They ventured 50 miles into the Gulf in search of jumbo mangrove snapper and were rewarded with fish up to six pounds.

They lost no fewer than 30 more grovers to the mightly Goliath…

September in the Florida Keys

September 7th, 2009

. . . Fishing here continues to be epic. The last week or so has been very warm with little or no wind. Glassy smooth conditions make it easy to spot rollers, tailers and wakers. How ever it can be very tough to present a fly to permit in these conditions… Fall is a great time to fish the Florida…

Reef Bite Right

September 5th, 2009

Offshore fishing in the middle Keys has been hit and miss lately with some good catches of Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) being had mostly around floating debris. Some larger fish have been hitting the docks recently, and can be anywhere from 6-30 miles offshore and is more of a hunt right now than just going fishing. Finding the birds can be another…

Little Girl… Big Fish

Brianna Sutton and family, from Pittsburgh, PA, spent the day fishing aboard the Mr. Z and came home with the trophy catch.   While dropping on a Submarine wreck in 240 feet of water, Brianna caught, fought, and landed this 40 lb. Amberjack all by herself.

The “Hammer Jack” took 20 minutes to land and was released to fight another day!

Plenty of Dolphin Around Middle Keys!

August 20th, 2009

The offshore bite off of Marathon and the middle Keys this week has produced some great catches of Dolphin fish (Mahi-Mahi). Nice school fish have been found all over the area from 11-19 miles offshore. Some have been under Frigate birds and some around floating debris. Nice ‘gaffer’ sized fish have been common and some large bulls and cows have…

Tarpon Fishing Still Hot

August 19th, 2009

Dolphin fishing remains spotty. Some boats are catching a handful; while others are catching thirty. The most consistent action is the blackfin and skipjack tuna at the humps.

The yellowtail snapper bite is good; the mangrove snappers have pretty much turned off.

Tarpon fishing remains very good in the bridge channels. Most of the fish are in the 40 to 60 pound…

Tarpon 175 Pounds

July 29th, 2009

Last night I took my client out to target tarpon. We caught tarpon however, the biggest thrill of the night was the 175 lb tarpon who rose to the surface numerous times. What a great time. It took my client 1 hour and 15 minutes to reel the monster to the boat!

Bonefish Action Heats Up

July 25th, 2009

During the past week, we have had some outstanding Bonefishing on the backcountry flats near Key West and the Lower Keys.  The weather has straightened out and is now predominantly out of the east, which provides for good, consistent fishing on the flats.

All in all, the 2009 Tarpon season will go down as one that was great from April to…

Fishing and Karma

July 22nd, 2009

I had a trip Sunday that started off as a hump trip. The weather first thing in the morning was perfect. Seven knot winds out of the Southeast and nothing on the radar. We load the boat and set off for what we hoped would be a tuna and billfish adventure. As we get ready to leave the dock the…
