Do We Have to Get Up Early if We Want to Catch a Fish?

December 8th, 2008

That’s the beauty of fishing out of Key West, Florida; time of day just doesn’t really matter.  Besides the sales pitch of our local Tourist Development Council that says, “Relax, it’s five o’clock somewhere.”  It really doesn’t matter when you want to get out, we can make it happen.  That’s just what we do.  And as Capt. Steve is famous for saying, “Fish feed when they are hungry!”

Jeff Piekarski proved my point last Thursday when he decided that our usual 7 am departure time was just a bit premature to allow a full previous night’s indulgences settle before taking on the big one.  We rolled off the dock promptly at 12:30 pm on one of the most beautiful weather days you can imagine.  Due south we ran for no more than 30 minutes, and as Capt. Steve let out the first line, we had a Sailfish actually swim right to our tailpipes and beg to be fed!  Not wanting to disappoint the charter or the fish, Capt. Steve dropped back a nicely rigged Ballyhoo and let the naive fish eat.  The ensuing battle was the thrill of a lifetime for Jeff and the trip was made in the first 20 minutes.  But, we went on to catch Dorado, Kingfish, Barracuda, and Tuna.  Not bad for an afternoon trip!
