Its a Sailfish!…I Mean a Wahoo!
July 8th, 2009Sometimes even we don’t have any idea of what is on the line, but if we get excited you can damn well be sure it’s something good! We fish about 200 to 250 charters a year and if you see me taking out my camera, coming down the bridge to shake your hand, or screaming that, “It’s the fish of a lifetime,” you can be sure it is an out of the ordinary catch and very special!
Last Tuesday, Frank Schultz drove his family and friends down from Marco Island to catch any afternoon charter on board the “Mr. Z.” I told Frank all about how afternoon trips were tough because most of the fish were caught in the morning, all about the full moon, and the incoming tide when the fish of a lifetime hit the deep troll and proceeded to light up about 200 yards of line on the 50 wide and there was mass confusion. Franks’ daughter, Amanda, was in the chair and doing her best to keep the line tight and at first guess, Capt. Steve and I both thought that it was a Sailfish since it would come to the surface and splash before diving down again and running more line.
Finally, the fish gave up and came right to the boat to be gaffed and placed in the ice.
So, the moral to the story is, you just never know what you are going to catch… That’s why it’s called fishing!
